So you have arguably the most vile being in human history ruling your country with an iron fist, starting wars on a global scale and imprisoning people left and right whilst launching the largest genocide known to man. Even with the vast propaganda network, someome had to realize what was going on. Did anyone try to actually do something about it and kill Hitler? If so, who were they? How were they stopped and why did they fail?

Yes. Claus Schenk, Count von Stauffenberg planted a bomb at the Wolf's Lair. It was in a briefcase which was moved by an aide. It wound up wounding Hitler not killing him.
Also Dietrich Bonhoeffer, he was sent to a concentration camp where he died.

There was also an attempt by the Mexican ambassador to poison Hitler by presenting him with a bottle of very high quality tequila that had been laced with cyanide. The attempt failed because Hitler never drank tequila. He thought it made him mean.

i did not know about the mexican ambassador. that is as interesting as it is funny ("he thought it made him mean" - that kills me!).

however, hitler did not drink ANY alcohol, as he was a teetotaler as well as a vegetarian.

btw, i believe there were at least five people arrested and hanged (with piano wire - it decapitated them!) in that famous attempt on hitler. and it is true that rommel was offered the dignity of committing suicide - he even got to go home and say good-bye to his family!

now, i am going by my memory and i havent read on this subject in a few years, so you may have to click on those links (provided by the other answerers) for verification.

Staffenberg came the closest, for his failure, he forfeited his own life. Pure luck saved adolf when a military adjutant moved the suitcase bomb to another part of a heavy wooden table, thus shielding hitler from the main blast....sheer luck kept him alive. He attributed his luck to providence and thought he had the ultimate mandate to carryon his evil ambitions.....

Yes. Oberst Claus Schenk, Count von Stauffenberg. And I understand that the German's billed his family for the cost of his hanging, although the site I got the name from says he was shot.
