I don't believe they are a necessity, especially in middle schools or high schools. I understand some people have them in high schools, but don't use them during class. Wait til after school. If it is an emergency, call from the class phone or the office phone. Education should be put first instead of entertainment.

Definately convenience, I can't think of any reason why kids need to have a cell phone in school. True enough the fact that some kids had then at Columbine probably helped to save lives that day. I don't think it should be something a kid has to have in school. Too much of a distraction from the learning process. Instead of paying attention in class alot of kids would more than likely be text messaging each other. True enough that they'd probably just distract themselves with the good old fashioned "note passing" that doesn't give good reason to say okay you can bring in your cell/sidekick or whatever. Schools are there for a reason and it isn't to socialize.

I don't think that students should use the phones in school. They're distracting, noisy, and inappropriate. I had a prepaid cell phone back in high school, that was mostly used for calling my mom to have her pick me up. Plus with all of the plagiarism issues in high school, cell phones may help contribute to students cheating.

I didn't get a regular cell phone until I went to college where I was trusted not to go over my minutes.

They serve no practical purpose and are only a distraction. Kids shouldn't need to make or take phone calls while they're at school, unless it's an emergency. In that case, there should be a public pay phone or they can ask to use an office phone.

It's completely unnecessary. Many teachers where I live advise students to turn them off or risk losing them. If one rings during class or if it is used during class...even played with to check for messages it is confiscated. A parent must show up to retrieve the phone. A friend of mine teaching high school generally collects between 7-10 cell phones per day.

I think its good for students to have cell phones because it helps to keep track of them, especially if they walk home to or from school . But I think the kind of phones they have are important to consider. They have phones for kids that parents can authorize the phone numbers allowed, such as home or parent cell phone for emergency. Also there are many know with GPS locating systems, that may help if the kid is kidnapped.

Schools are equipped with phone lines for incoming and outgoing calls ... any reasonable emergency situations can be managed using these lines when necessary. Cellular phones cause continual distractions/annoyances and they should be banned from the classroom setting.
