My lawn is way to big, to much work, water bill is to high. But I still want my house & yard to look good. Any suggestions?

ANDREA F above is on the right track... but skip the deck. To much work & money. Widen out areas under trees & shrubs with thick layers of mulch. Way out beyond the trees drip line. Blend areas together with sweeping lines of mulch much as you would circle a putting green with fairway. Only your fairway will be mulch, instead of turf. I designed just such a "lawn Buster" for a friend in Wisconsin. Many truck loads of mulch later, we had reduced his turf area by almost 2/3 & he is thrilled. I've been getting call from his neighbors requesting info so they too can cut back on extra work & water costs. Who knows, we may have started a new form of landscape design?

Make some large borders, on both sides of the yard. Add perennials, and add lots of mulch. That will cut down on the water bill too.
In the center of the lawn, do the same type of thing, with a large circle, with paving or edging bricks, or something similar.
Take a good long look at your neighbors yards, to see if they have something you could use. Buy a gardening book, lots of good ideas there too. There are lots of drought resistant plants and flowers out there, that will help cut down water usage.

Start by planting english ivy around the base of all your trees. Within 3 years you will have half the size lawn and beauty as well.

Try landscaping with mulch gardens (with low-maintenance plants within it) and big rocks, if you can find them. Or perhaps build a very large deck in the backyard?

Two interesting websites below on this topic. Good luck!

Start replacing lawn space with garden. Perennials, ivies, trees - all are less work than grass.

Make some large pine islands. Kill off the grass with roundup and throw pine straw down, then plant some landscape plants, trees, etc.

Yeh, put in a circle drive or a big patio. I vote for both. It is your yard though. Good luck!
