It doesn't take 3 seconds for old crusty chips, lent, pubes, bacteria, fece, boogers, salmonella, ecoli, etc. to get on your sandwich.

If you dropped it in the bathroom by the toilet, I'd give it up. If you can't remember if you mopped the floor after you tracked dog dookie in last, trash it. If you're clean, and you clean frequently, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sure it still applies. Now if the floor had been vacuumed recently then the 10 second rule applies. Pick it up, dust it off and enjoy! Everyones gonna eat a little dirt before they die, and we have an immune system that takes care of most germs.

Well, seeing as how you asked the question 3 minutes ago and you're still waiting for an answer, I don't think even the 3 second rule itself is valid any longer. Let that be a lesson - don't go for a month without vacuuming!

According to Mythbusters, it matters more if the food is wet or not. Dry food harbors less bacteria. See Episode 39 - Chinese Invasion Alarm

I thought it was the 5 second rule. And only if you say, "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt. Amen!"

No that is so nasty you got to throw that sandwich away, but you probably already ate it so it don't matter
