I am goingg to say they deserved it with a bit of luck. Yes the PK was unjustified but so was the red card in the same match that made Italy play a man down for 51 minutes. If Grosso cheated so did the Aussie when he flopped without even being touched.
As far as playing the easiest teams. Since when did Chech Republic become an easy team to play against. Remember that they were even favored by some to win the cup. US had a war against them. GHANA is an excellent excellent team. They were the best team out of Africa who has repeatedly put a team in the quarters for the last 4 world cups. By the way African champions in the last world cup knocked out France. (Senegal)
Ukraine is not an easy team either by the way, who says that?
Now lets look at France they played who?Togo, Korea, Switzerland. None of these countries are good in football.
BRazil of course is an excellent team.
And then there is Portugal which is lets say equal to Germany. They had a tougher road.
FORZA ITALIA.
And Aussies get over it.

a. For the first world cup since I've started really watching, the italians are playing for the full game instead of trying to make a goal and stalling the rest of the time. Before this started I predicted they would win it all if they took this approach (if not I picked Germany).
b. bad call, but they didn't cheat. It wasn't a dive, he tripped naturally. But the ref muffed the call. Still, since australia didn't score either they don't have much room to complain.
c. when?
d. You could argue the same about france, they beat an unmotivated brazil and portugal who has scored a grand total of one goal in their last 3 matches (not counting penalties).

All of the above, but the main reason is that the Italian media has been concentrating so much on corruption that the players have been left to get on with the job. Thus relieving the intense pressure which other sides have experienced.
Plus since the last 16 stage started every team has been overly defencive, playing right into the Italian's game plan.

I just would add that also in past World Cup tournaments, Italy started quite slowly and ended up making the final and/or the semifinals. You don't have to play spectatular soccer every game.

Italy is a great team,Cannavaro&Buffon created a wall,and they are the best defenders of this years cup,also in attack they did a great job so far.With all that match-fixing stuff and all those scandals they made it after all,the team is united,they have the same thoughts\moves,they are in great shape,and they didn't had the chance to kiss the cup since 1982!
I respect France as well,Zidane is one of the greatest footballers ever.
I'm half italian anyway,so FORZA ITALIA!!!

because they started off quietly, so that nobody noticed them, then they got better as the tournament progresses, as they always seem to do!!
and they also have some fantastic players and the 2 hours they played against Germany was a joy to watch, despite not scoring till the last minute
