South East Asian cultures have always farmed dogs and cats, and they make up a substantial proportion of their diet. Why is this viewed as bad in western society? Should they be treated any different to sheep, cows, and chickens just because we keep them as pets?

I've always wondered this too. I finally decided it's because, once we started using them as hunting companions, they just sort of slowly became our friends, and before we knew it, we couldn't eat a dog without seeing cute Lassie's face.

People in asia eat dogs and cats all the time,but cows in the Hindu religion are sacrade,and they are not eaten and muslims dont eat pigs,so every culture religion has a meat source that is ot eaten.diffrent strokes for diffrent folks I guess

I agree with the first answer, the reason the meat is bad is that cats and dogs are carnivores. It is also not energy efficient to eat animals near the top of the food chain.

We do not eat cats and dogs because we are not in that position where it becomes necessary.
I sincerely hope the world food shortage never comes to that.
It is possible that is their culture and they have a shortage of other optional meat to eat.
Different cultures eat different foods all over the world.

Thats why we raise cattle and pigs, etc. In asian countries they do not have the land to raise alot of these animals. Have you ever seen the price of a steak in other countries?

If there is ever a REAL famine in America, when the crops have failed and people are starving... you won't be able to find many cats and dogs in this country.

some ppl think its like evil to kill anything cute. most ppl would be shocked at eating a kitten, but fine with eating a calf. society these days...
