Hard, hard question. However, limiting it to "song" instead of "piece of music" rules out some of the big works of Classical music, so I'll stick to Contemporary.

Radiohead - "How To Disappear Completely" is the winner for today. The whole song is about combining clashing ideas that inexplicably work perfectly. It starts with quiet, dissonant strings holding on a tone cluster, similar to a static shot of disturbing horror movie music. Then enters a simple, two-chord progression on acoustic guitar strummed politely in 6, and none of the tones played on the strings match anything the guitar is doing. The bass guitar enters, playing precise 4 against the guitar's six, so that the rhythm is thrown out of whack 75% of the time. Each piece is nothing special, and nothing should work with anything else. Combined into a whole, with a heavily affected guitar occasionally jumping in for emphasis, it creates a disturbingly pretty opening.

The rest of the song is equally mind-bendingly beautiful - the bass continues to clash rhythmically, even as the strings fade and the drums enter on the beat of the guitar. What sounds like a keyboard made for Video Game Music shows up at one point and plays arpeggios during the chorus, oddly stirring and emotional and even though it should be horrendously out of place, it works. The strings tug at the listeners heart, as Thom Yorke's singing rises to an emotional peak, then overwhelm everything with climbing dissonance, reaching, pulling, tearing the song apart - and then a moment of clarity as everything resolves naturally into place.

It's difficult to describe the intense beauty of the song in a short fashion, so I stopped trying. I almost had tears welling up just describing it, simply from playing it over in my head enough to describe it. It's a work of absolutely masterful crafting, wrenching, overwhelming, and nothing short of beauty. Oh, and I just realised how long-winded I am.

It would probably be "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because the grunge sound changed the face of music as we know it! The other would be "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters because it is such a bad a** song! Listen to the acoutic version!
