There have been some really good musical movies out recently: Chicago, Rent, The Producers. And yet, only Chicago was modestly successful. Musicals used to be the movie studios bread and butter, now you're lucky if you can get enough money to videotape a high school production (okay, I'm exaggerting, but still...) The few that do come out aren't popular. Why is that?

I guess my real question is: Why can't people suspend disbelief to enjoy musicals? Here's a link to my blog post on the subject; that should help explain it a little more.

I think in part because today's popular music doesn't lend itself to storytelling, and conversely, the sort of music that makes a good musical isn't popular. That and the mass audience for movies is much younger than it was in the 50's and thus somewhat less likely to sit through a lot of gratuitous singing and dancing.

It's a cyclic thing. Musicals and comedies were popular during the depression and WW II to make people feel happy and upbeat. That lasted somewhat through the 50's and early 60's then they fell out of favor. I'm definitely a musical lover. I LOVE Broadway musicals. I knew who Jerry Orbach was (and was madly in love with him) before he was in Law and Order. I think they're slowly starting to return. As the saying goes, "just wait around long enough and everything old will be new again."

I love old musicals (My Fair Lady, Brigadoon), but not so much the ones that are made today. Maybe the classics just can't be duplicated, but I think because the actors had talent and they didn't have to use special effects and graphics. Although, they are still making musicals today such as Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Chicago, which are good, but not the same.

I think it depends a lot on where your from, I'm British and most people I know can't get enough of stuff like Chicago, Grease that kind of thing.. It's just cultural.

because its boring to listen to music between every scene, and its confusing to go from talking to singing, and sometimes u cant understand the words, and if u wanted u listen 2 music u would just get a cd!

Musicals are my favorite genre! I have practically everyone ever made on DVD. "Hello Dolly", "Meet Me in St Louis", "Xanadu" (lol). Lots more too.
