I am a 23 year old at home single Mother with a 20 month old son in Bristol. I am currently on Income Support but I really want to study to become a Nurse or a Midwife. I have 8 GCSE passes but not Maths and I have done an Advanced GNVQ but that was in Art. I've contacted 2 colleges in Bristol but neither of them have got back to me as yet. I dont know how to go about it or which course I should go for? and also how much it's going to cost??! Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks :)

There's a high demand for people wanting to study midwifery or nursing (by the way, they are both very different career choices so you need to be clear in your head what you want to do, as just putting both will not impress a college!).
There are plenty of people applying with A-Level passes to go and study these. You can apply direct to the universities being a mature student, but bear in mind that the burseries are small, and you will need full time child care while you are on placements, which are full time. You will need proof of recent study in a health related area, so a short course will be fine.

You have done the right thing so far, keep on at the universities. I trained as a nurse in 1993, after 10yrs in admin, we are in process of emigrating to australia based on my qualifications, it can open many doors, and is very enjoyable, although the politics get you down at times. Decide which type of nursing is best suited to you, i chose mental health, but when i trained there was the opotunity to change half way through if we felt we weren't suited to that branch.

My advice keep putting in the applications, keep following them up, don't let it go, it will be worth it!!

it all depends on what type of nurse you want to be. cna or lpn you can get through a technical school and it would be a lot cheaper than going through a college or university. but if want the rn liscense you will need to go through a university to get get that. if you go for the rn lisence you need to talk to a professor in the nursing dept. of the school that you want to attend and they can give you more information on what courses that you need to take. I hope that this has helped you some.
