Because those in power wish to stay in power. Masses who can think and act of their own accord without reprise are a dangerous threat to the status quo of a corrupt society or civilization. Count yourself lucky that the past few hundred years have been accepting of 'free speech,' because historically, criticizing one's ruler would end in a public execution.

The reason our freedom of speech is being slowly taken away is because we now have an opportunity to say so!!!
Because of being p.c we are now able to voice our opinions......isn't that nice! Thank god for England.....or is it?
I do wonder what is happening to our country or even if it is our country anymore!
Would love feedback on this plz.

We let it. Everytime we have to be politically correct, we lose our free speech rights. Everytime someone says something idiotic or racist or sexist and we don’t let that person say it, or defend that person from the howling ninnies screaming at him or her, then we’ve lost our free speech just a little more.
As long as Jesse Jackson and the ACLU and other liberal bedwetters are out there tearing down crosses, pulling the Ten Commandments off of walls, and turning baby Jesus out into the street, and we don’t stop them, then our free speech rights are being eroded.
When Mark Twain is banned by libraries, and you don’t say something about it, then you are letting your free speech rights slip away.
You oughta kick someone in the teeth everytime someone else’s free speech rights are trampled.

If you mean why is our freedom of speech being taken away SLOWLY, then it's because those who are doing it are relying on the 'musn't grumble' ethos inherent in our society to grind us down.
If you just want to know why it is being taken away, then Animal Farm explains it very well.

George Orwell was right but slightly out by a few decades.
Politically correct means taking your rights away piece by piece.
You are living in the real big brother and the government want to keep you naive.

How is it being taken away? I want a real answer not something you heard on Air America. Don't have an answer do you? Grow up and learn to think for yourself.

You can say anything you want. However, the point that most libs don't understand, is that there are consequences for your actions. That means: The gov't won't censor you, but your fellow citizens may dislike you. Take an unpopular stance:Be unpopular.

For the same reason gas prices are out of control and oh look car manufacturers have suddenly found a way to improve gas mileage just enough to please the consumers. Its a game and there are no winners on our side.
