I believe it has to do with the fact that schools DO NOT teach spelling as a subject. Students are no longer taught that spelling is important. In our state our students are taught based on our state testing which has a lot of open response questions. The children are taught how to answer questions instead of how to spell the words they choose to answer the questions with. Spelling is no longer an art, neither is letter writing. We're just old school.
No one cares anymore.
I don't believe this category is used by those with higher educations; just postings to higher education subjects or to those who hold a higher education.
Maybe no one realizes they can check their spelling.

For some reason, the Internet community as a whole seems to think that abbreviations are the correct methodology for speedy communications.

Beats me why this happens. Words are symbols of information exchange. Where there is a hurried exchange it seems to me there is less value placed upon the conversation.

What a shame.

I agree. The one word that seems to be misspelled the most is "does." A lot of people spell it "dose."
