The FIFA ranking is based on the number of games played by each country in their confederation. The US is part of the CONCACAF. The matches they play are against very small football countries (except Mexico!) :
- USA (5th)
- Panama
- Jamaica
- El Salvador
- Costa Rica (26th)
- Guatemala
- Honduras
- Canada
- Mexico (4th)
- Trinidad and Tobago (47th)
- St. Vincent / Grenadines
- St. Kitts and Nevis

The results of these games put the US as the 5th best performer in the world (games won, goals scored, etc...). Mexico being number 4 in the world.

The World Cup was sponsored by Coca-Cola, an American company. So it was in the best interest of the FIFA officials to rank the US at least in the top 10 so that Coca Cola could use this as an advertising tool as well. One hand washing the other. Coke got more for the advertising dollar, and FIFA got a big fat check. The ones who suffered were the Americans all 27 that watched the world cup, and the families of the players.

They were a good team but you have to go all the way. England have been to the quarter finals 9 times sometimes w. great teams and only won once in '66. This is the World Cup, you can't always have a team that wins like when you're playing between you're own countries teams so your own country can't lose (as a whole).
Even if you're Brasil, Italy or Germany you still have to get used to losing most of the time and take it like a man, it's the competition.

I dont know, all I can tell u is that the Fifa world ranking is wacked, they ranked Mexico 9, germany 19 and Argentina 22. They have a mysterious way to come out with those numbers. Or probably they are drunk when they do those.

Because FIFA wants america to do well, because if they do then football might become more popular in the USA, and think of all the money they could make.

Its sad, because they were so blatantly marked up, there are dozens of better teams.

fifa's ratings are notoriously bad, few people take them seriously. We beat Mexico out for the concacaf championship and they were rated even higher. Jamaica beat us and we jumped in the ratings. The WC seedings are more realistic, and in those we were apparently ranked somewhere between 17th & 32nd.
