Yes... AOL IM is free and does not require full AOL membership.

As of 7/6/06 in order to have an AOL account, one must still be on one of their subscription plans. AOL is thinking to offer free web-based accounts - the NY Times article is in the source link.

AOL instant messenger is free, the AOL internet service you have to pay for. You have to sign up for the messenger and download it to your computer.
