As of 7/6/06 in order to have an AOL account, one must still be on one of their subscription plans. AOL is thinking to offer free web-based accounts - the NY Times article is in the source link.

When you get to the page above, in the log-in box there is a sign-up link. Click that and fill in the form it gives you.

AOL instant messenger is free, the AOL internet service you have to pay for. You have to sign up for the messenger and download it to your computer.
