five years on, do americans feel that the war on terror has been worth it, or are we no better off, is it a war that can only be won by changing our and their attitude about how we can exist together on this planet

I think the Bush administration has used the war on terror as camouflage for their own inept military adventurism. The invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism, and has succeeded in creating a terrorist training ground. The invasion of Afghanistan did have legitimate anti-terrorist objectives, but we largely bungled them.

Strategic ineptitude aside, war is the wrong word for the struggle against terrorism. Wars are declared against political entities, and end when the enemy has surrendered. But there is no end to terrorism, as long as there's a fanatic with a grenade and a grudge.

how do you win a war on terror ? It's impossible . The best you can possibly do is achieve an ongoing stalemate. The idea that a legal war on terror is winnable is absurd . How do you know that you won ? It is not quantifiable.
Are all the past, present and future terrorists going to break bread in the great hall of Ellis Island and sign a document to terror no more ? NO
Remember one thing, prior to 9/11 the greatest act of terrorism on American soil was commited by an American

Hm, the USA had not been bombed for most of its history prior to the War on Terror. The only execeptions that I know of involved specific foreign countries, not terrorists without a country. If a foreign country attacks your country, you know where to send the bombs and the soldiers. But if a terrorist hits your country, then no specific country is responsible. Where do you send you bombs and soldiers? In order to find the terrorists, you have to violate the sovereignty of every country where the terrorists might be hiding - which in itself could begin war after war after war....

The War on Terror is stupid. It will cause more trouble, not less. It will end when the US government runs out of money to spend. Or it will end when the US government runs out of fossil fuels to run jeeps, tanks, battleships, and aircraft. And when it ends, the reprisals will come, and they will not quickly end.

Dubya and his puppeteers policies go way back :-

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country"
