It really all depends. Either when you are about 5 cm dialated or when your water breaks. Also, if you have having contractions less than 5 mins a part go in

Are you having contractions? Women can be dialated to a 2 for weeks and nothing will happen. I was at a 5 at my 38th week appointment, so you never know what will happen. Labor is a fickle thing. It's all on baby's time.

Usually the hospital will tell you when your contractions are about 10 mins apart and they are severe enough that you can't talk or walk through them.

Since this is your third baby, don't wait until contractions are 5 mins apart. Subsequent babies tend to come faster each time, so waiting that long could mean you end up having the baby in the car on the way to the hospital.. that would not be fun.

Sometimes the hospital will check you and make you walk for a while and then check you again. If anything has changed, they will admit you and let your doctor know.

If you aren't having contractions and your doctor just told you how far dialated you are, then I wouldn't worry about it. I understand that you are uncomfortable, but this baby will come when it's ready to come.

You can try walking- it helps to bring the baby down and puts pressure on the cervix which will help with dialation. You can have sex- prostolandins in semen will help soften the cervix and get things rolling, also orgasm for you can cause contractions to start, so that may help you.

Acupressure is a good one. The one suggested by someone else is a good spot, but there is also one between your thumb and first finger, in the webbing of skin there. You will know you hit it because it will be sore. Press and hold for about 20 seconds, then release. Do this for 15-20 mins at a time.

You can try a nice relaxing bath. Sometimes it will relax your body enough that things start moving.

I wouldn't try castor oil- it causes severe abdominal cramps that are horrible and it's a laxative, so it will make you go to the bathroom, but it will be diarrhea and that isn't fun at all.

Don't do nipple stimulation without a doctors approval!! It can cause really bad contractions that don't do anything for dialation or effacement.

I hope some of this helps!! Good luck and hopefully you don't have long to wait!!!

So far, I see a lot that I agree with. Until your water brakes, SEX!!! The sperm does help soften the cervix. Walking, lots of walking. Showers to help you relax. And... get a foot/ankle rub!! There is a presure point for your uterus between your ankle bone and your heel (Best if you can relax and get hubby to do it, but you can probably reach your own feet if you try). This was suggested to me when I was a week past due, and I started having contractions after about 5 minutes of rubbing!!

Once you are having regular contractions, every 5-10 minutes, is when most dr's would say to head into the hospital. I know from my experience, labor was very slow... until they broke my water. One of mine, the dr broke my water when I was at 7cm, and it was only 3 more minutes before my son was on the bed with me! You can walk around for 2 weeks partially dialated, with no bad side effects.

I am not trying to be rude, but if it is your third child then you have done this before and you should know when to go to the hospital.
The baby will come when it is ready. At only 2 cen. it could be awhile yet.

This is your third child and you don't know when to go to the hospital??
Are you actually in labor? If your doctor is the one who told you how dilated you are, call him/her and ask them what they recommend as a time to go to the hospital. Most will advise when your contractions are 5 minutes or less apart.

Just wait. Not much else you can do. They'll not let you stay until your contractions are regularly between 5-7 minutes. I know you are impatient, but the baby can't stay in there forever.

have sex, the semen is suppose to help soften the cervix.
Go for a walk, gravity will help.
go for a drive on a bumpy road.

Every woman is different so you could be like that for another couple hours or another couple days.

Good luck and Congrats!!

You could go any minute or it could be another week. I was 2cm, and 100% effaced, and I had my baby 7 days later.
