Ask your attorney who is doing the probate. He will have the correct answers for you since all states are so different.

It sounds like you're the personal representative? If you're the PR, I would contact your local courthouse to find out if there's a booklet of some sort for PR's of estates. If your state/county/whatever doesn't offer guidelines for PR's, I would contact an attorney. Most offer free first consultations, so you wouldn't have to worry about decimating the money for the charities. Good luck.

being an atty for a real "piece of work" for many years. i know how the following thru on a last will can be downright hard for some ppl. along with myself my client had a Dr and a priest in his inner confidence circle and no family. when he passed away he gave us each 1/3rd his wealth to be certain he could "take it all with him". after the old mans funeral we 3 met one last time
as we were speaking about all his millions and how he wanted to be selfish to the end & beyond! His dr made a lil confession of how he witheld a lil bit of the money to build a burn center for his hospital. i was about to say somethng when the priest too admitted he witheld some for the new church bldg. i tossed down my napkin in anger and disgust and let them both have a piece of my mind!
when they both looked at each other curiously so and almost in unison both sd you... a lawyer ....are indismay over this? c'mon! theres no way we believe you didnt keep any of his money.
so as i stood up to leave, i sd i put a personal check in for the full amount! and i assure you both im good for the money!
