We are fast approaching the time when globally we just cant extract any more of the black gold from poor mother earth! Many countries are now in delcine with depletion rates of between 3-7%!
Demand is growing due to the economic explosion of asia and most of the known reserves are in the Middle East & Russia!
What annoys me is why this fundamentally HUGE moment in our history is not openly talked about in the media! We are litterally within a few years of this becoming a major problem. Just look at the price of oil, commodoties & how geopolitical events are playing out! Iraq, Iran & Russias new found confidence due to its huge gas & oil revenue! Of the 85 million barrels used each day, America uses over 20 million, and they're only 5% of the wolrds population! If everyone on the planet aspired to the lifestyle of America we'd need five to six planets! Over consumption is driving the world into a corner where conflict looms on the horizon for control of the earths remaining resources

Your right. This is a huge moment in our history but I would dissagree with the fact that nobody is talking about it ! As an ex commodity broker I know this market very well and I'm aware that many other commodities have been trading at multi year highs.

If by nobody you mean the media well then the answer to that question is obvious. If something is inevitable then why cause panic ? Governments and media seem more than happy to create fear about things like terrorism because this gives them the opportunity to take more control.

On the other hand, if they created fear about a particular commodity people would naturally stock pile that commodity and what do you think that would do to the price ??

Increased demand = decreased supply

This means huge rise in the price. Basic economics one to one.

The oil crisis is a disaster waiting to happen. That's why my cars been in the garage for 2 years and I've started cycling to work everyday. Start getting used to it !

In the near future travelling to another country is going to become a service only available to the rich. Power may be rationed and the world will be a very different place.

To everyone who says build more nuclear power stations and wind turbines they clearly do not understand the problems we are facing. The modern world runs on Oil and Oil alone - once it's gone there is nothing to replace it ! There is no back up plan and no other options at present.

Hopefully there will be a break through in technology that presents us with a new solution to the problem but I'd invest in a bike if I was you !

If your assertions are correct than the USA the great super power will be in control. I can live with that, considering the alliterative. It is just over the horizon of renewable fuel sources. Even now we have people that will not use them because it is too expensive. If we were all to start using ethanol the cost would stay around the $3 mark and gasoline would drop to under that price just to make it unprofitable to produce. Than our great patriotic nation would all stop buying ethanol to save .50 a gallon on the cheaper gas with greater mileage. So quit your wining wood ya?

As you point out, 3-7% depletion. Those numbers laid beside the fact that we will have hydrogen cars by 2012 and a host of new nuclear power plants make me feel pretty secure we won't be fighting over that last drop. I mean it took more than 100 years to attain that rate of depletion. Even if you multiply it by the number of increased cars or households or both, you still don't reach 40% depletion in 100 more years and that presupposes absolutely no alternative usage whatsoever.

Relax. Research a broader set of sources for your information. Don't trust inflammatory, dramatic writing (or documentaries). This style is most commonly utilized to stand in the gap of missing facts and to outshine them.

I recently learnt (comedy show on TV) that oil production will peak between 2006-2010 and without alternative sources, the slow death of our current civilisation will follow. With plenty of money still to be made from the oil, gas reserves left, I'm not holding my breath for politicians or big business for a change. Its we who elect the likes of what we have now and cant do without our 'mod-cons'. The populations 6 billion +. We, are either not listening or don't care.

That ' moment ' would be the one that started in 1977 then, when the first country experienced it's ' peak oil ' moment?

Sorry, but I forget the said countries name.

Your question, I guess, is ' why is this not being talked about? '

Maybe we all have our heads buried in the ground.

Looking for oil?
