Get him started on a Championship hat collection. Everytime someone wins a Championship (hockey, baseball, basketball, or football) then buy him the "official locker-room edition" hat. Have him take pride in his collection and knowing that it might be worth money someday if it is displayed and not worn. He will really look forward to the next Championship event to bulk up his loot. Eventually, he will continue the tradition on his own (if you decide to stop buying) and it will always be a special bond with you two. Hats can be purchased on-line at sports type sites, so it won't be difficult to find out-of-town hats.

You can even step it up a notch by being sure to watch the games with him. Right now, the Miami Heat and the Carolina Hurricanes locker-room hats are going for about $27.00.

Depends on what sports he likes. My brother is an all sports crazy so I usually give him on his birthdays one good gift of one of those sports, maybe the one he is most into by that time. If he likes soccer then you can give him some cool shoes. For golf try a new bag for his poles. Stuff like that.
