Actually, many viruses and spyware install themselves after you reboot. So by keeping your computer ON, you reduce that possibility.
But you also must do some computer maintenance. Go to www.download.com and get these to free software packages.

it fairly is a relentless argument between IT professionals on each scale. the two sure and no solutions have been shown. i individually do not see why this is better to maintain it working 24/7 even nonetheless I do. i haven't had any problems with it and the final time I close my pc off became some months in the past. Now, some will argue that it will overheat (maximum pc's won't overheat except they are in a small, enclosed section), some will that the pc will decelerate (this could be a fantasy), and a few say that it will harm your demanding tension (have not experienced this yet). yet I circulate away mine on by way of private decision, not because of the fact this is better for the pc.

Turning off the computer saves mechanical wear and tear on it, as well as keeping your electricity bills down. Not many people know that a computer and monitor use up as much energy as 3 or even 4 100-watt lights!
Keep your antivirus updated, and don't forget to regularly dump your cookies, temporary files, and internet cache- those slow systems down. (Norton Utilities has "Clean Sweep', which does this for you with one click.) Get a good AV program and run it regularly, and keep your hard drive defragged.
I turn my computer off at night, or when I know I'm not going to use if for several hours.

Only if you have some scheduled jobs like disk defragmenter or anti-spyware that runs at night. It is true that certain computer parts, such as hard drives and processors and memory tend wear faster when the machine is powered on and off frequently. On average you should shut down a windows XP computer down weekly.

It's not better to leave it on, nor is it better to leave it off. There really is no difference. If you have an Intel processor, they start out fast and then level out over time because of heat and their design (might have been fixed on your processor, don't know). AMD processors stay at the same speed.
One reason your computer at home goes slowly might be because it's a worse quality than your one at work. Also, more heat at home and less heat at work makes the work computer better off.

see as far as my experience of keeping computer on depends on the work you do. for example, if you keep on switching on and off your car or any motor vehicle, it will definitely drain the battery, the fan belt and so on. and if you don't start it at least for some time in a day the battery will not give up the spark and the rest parts gets freezed.
in the similar fashion, computer's also work. if you keep switch it on and off as one of the persons below said will definitely will make it work slowly and if you don't switch it on you might not know wat is happening with the computer.
one more important note i want to say when going on a long trip we give breaks to the motor vehicle so that it cools off and regains its power. similarly the case is with the computers. see its not the thing that just keeping it on and leaving for its own. if you want to work then work if you don't wanna work then leave it for peace. i work around 14 to 20 hrs on the sys without switching it off and if i have more work i some times don't switch it off for days. and some times if i don't have work i don't even switch on even for days.
it all depends on the working conditions that you use the system. so there is no misconception that keeping the sys on for longer time will speed it up or slow it up. i never found my sys work faster or slower than usual when working for a long duration and when i say long it is around at least 14 to 20 hrs.
so hope by this you might have understood how the sys work and how we need to handle.
take care and have fun.
Best Regards.

I think it should be turned off all night so that it can "process it's thoughts". It works better if you defragment and do disk clean and keep pop ups away and clean out the history and cookies. If you leave your comptuer on all the time it can cause it to have an over heating problem...believe me i know lol it happened to mine

the best thing to do for your computer is to turn it off completly because if you leave it on 1: it waists your bill 2: some parts may not be able to handle all the power running for the computer all night and fry

It makes it run slower. It overheats. That little fan shouldn't be going all the time. Turn it off, and give it some rest!
