iheartjessilee - you're an idiot.. obviously your one of those truly rare ignorant Americans we here about in Canada..

Melander - the government makes a profit regardesss of the price of gas. The government does buy the gas/oil.. refineries and gas stations buy it.

saulg21 - No, the government of Canada WOULD NOT have to do that.. the provinces can do it.. two maritime provinces are currently doing it.. oh, and it's Capital.. NOT capitol!

Luchador - the price of fuel is not going to be capped below the actual cost.. what the regulation would be for is stopping gas stations from putting the price sky-high the SAME day that the price of oil goes up. Gas stations don't pay THAT price for oil the same day... they don't get that oil for 1 - 3 months.. we're paying the increase as consumers almost the same day.. we're getting screwed.. we shouldn't be paying a reflecting price until that oil makes it to the gas stations as gas!

So, why doesn't the Ontario government regulate our prices in Ontario?????

Two words - - - GAS TAXES - - -

You have Dalton McStunned-F_ _ K for that. The guys an idiot and I hope to god he's replaced at the next provincial election! He really has no understanding of how gas prices really affect the little guy. His big concern is teachers.. because his wife's a teacher... and they both make excellent money so they don't give a damn about the price of gas. Prices should be regulated... when the price can jump .10 - .20 cents a litre in one day... that tells me that something needs to be done.. short of assasinating the CEO's of all the oil companies and OPEC!!!

Gas prices at the pumps should be reflective of the price that the oil was when the refineries purchased the oil.. NOT the price oil is today. So, if oil is $76/barrell today... in a month or 2 or 3, when the oil has been refined and converted to gas, and, it makes it to the actual pumps.. THAT is when we should be paying the increased price. We're being ripped off.. .look at the profits the oil companies made in 2005.... that's proof enough that consumers are being gouged, screwed, ripped off, basically... its' legalized theft.. thanks to the Federal AND the provincial governments!

You really don't want to have the government put a cap on prices. Americans felt the extreme pain of that solution in the 70's with the oil embargo caused by our...ahem.....president carter and his or his advisers brilliant solution. When we first had price increases here, the state of Florida along with other states offered a temporary tax cut. It helped a bit. So that would be the optimum solution. I've said it and I'll keep on saying it, as long as China is growing in leaps and bounds so will there demand on oil. They are the reason the prices are jumping. No other!. Put that "made in china" back on the shelf.

it doesn't work. If you set the price of gas at 1.00 per liter and the price of gas exceeds that to 1.20 the station will not have the money to buy the next load. Let alone pay for the electricity to run the pumps.

I'd have to say because in order for the gov't to make a profit, they need to adjust the prices in accordance to what they buy it for, it's not really THEM that aren't regulating, at least, as far as I know heh. I realize, it's everyone in the chain, I just don't think the gov'ts are the bottom link.

It doesn't have a plan because government is always slow. It is a good idea, the flucuating gas pricing is ridiculous.
