why cant Americans spell humour correctly?

We do spell humor correctly. We also spell the words favorite and color correctly too.

The entire bases for American English is Danial Webster's dictionary which contracted many standard English words according to local diction. What 's ironic is that in theory such was not a sound justification, sense throughout the 17th and 18th century Europe was fond of Word Contractions even for names, and this was the case for the English even more so because of the foreign holding. Americans love speed and fast action. It's the same with words, so in most of those words like Humour, armour, Harbour etc, the Americans dropped the U. If you think of our, and were to try and pronounce those words, using that pronunciation, it would sound ridiculous. So we dropped the U, to make it easier.
I've been a US Citizen for years now, coming from Scotland, and still have trouble, knowing which one is which, when I am spelling. Especially with those words, with Z instead of S, in them, as in Categorize etc. I still have to think twice, when typing them. The dropping of U, was an easy one to remember.

Humor can be spelled two different ways. The British way is humour and the American way is humor. Depends on where you are from and how you are taught that determines the spelling. Technically they are both correct spellings. Nobody is wrong.

Because we're too busy laughing about your bumper chutes. (For the uninitiated, bumper chutes are the same as American umbrellas.) Just kidding! Personally, I use a lot of British spelling like theatre for theater and centre for center. My grandmother was from Nova Scotia and she spelled everything that way and as I child I thought it was so cool and I'd use it in school and of course the teachers didn't find it funny, just wrong.

humour and colour are old fashioned words. apparently the Brits have not been able to master their own language as of yet. Americans have removed the useless letters that only add to the confusion of the pronunciation.

Maybe because its spelled that way in all the dictionaries and thats how we're taught to spell it. Both spelled are correct anyways, so who cares?
