Our mail man either put the checks in the wrong box and someone cashed them, or someone got into our mailbox and took the mail. The people then took the checks to a liquor store, where the store did not require ID to cash them. We have a detective trying to find the culprits, but even if he finds out who did it, will not get us our money back. The banks will not re-issue the checks (it's not their problem), the mail man has put neighbors mail in our box recently, and the detective ignorantly can not find the store where the checks were cashed, even though he has the cancelled checks with account numbers stamped on them for all companies involved. Who do we need to be hounding about getting our money? Post office, Liquor store that cashed them, the company who issued the checks and let them get their money back when it's all figured out. I have many bills to pay, compared to the banks/issuing companies unlimited cash resources.

Hi I work at a bank and really if you have a police report and affidavit.. take this to your bank. All they have to do is compare signatures and see that your checks were obviously stolen. The checks can be disputed and usually in about 10 business days, you can get your money back.

This does not make a lot of sense. What kind of checks were these? If they were drawn on your bank, where they have a record of your signature, they have to pay you back the money.
If they were drawn on some other bank, it gets more complicated, but it seems to me the postal inspectors should be dealing with the first part of it.
There are only a few suspects if it went into a neighbor's mailbox, so the local police or your "detective" should be asking for information from your neighbors. With the cancelled checks, you can trace the chain back to where they were originally cashed, and pictures of the neighbors may establish who did it. Indeed, a lot of establishments that cash checks take pictures of people cashing checks.
On the other hand, if it's your signature on the checks, stop drinking so much.

The people who cashed the checks have committed mail fraud and will go to jail (if they get caught). Sounds like your detective is a dud...you need to get a new one! Have you contacted the post office or the Department of Justice? They may be able to help.

You are making a very big deal for such a small amount.
If you wash dishes after work for $5.15 USD you will get $700.00 back after 2 weeks. and I bet you are investing a lot of your time to this issue.
Get a second job and work hard for a while and get the $700.00 back and move on with your life.
Unless you are a businessmen you don't really need a checkbook.

You will probably never get your money back. The people who stole it even if they are caught might not pay it back (restitution). Who pays wal-mart back when people steal from them? Unless you had some sort of insurance you will likely not get anything back. Some banks have insurance but yours isn't helping. No one owes you this money back. Nobody pays for my stereo when it gets stolen out of my car either (unless i had insurance) so you are out of luck. Nobody pays back a person who gets mugged. You are a victim of theives.

If you didn't sign it, bank should be responsible for cashing out the forged signed checks. They should be able to nab the person who stole your check. Contact your bank and local police immediately!!

As far as I see it, you are out of luck. The money is gone.
Maybe a locking mailbox would curb the froblem in the future.
I am sorry

Nobody. You call yourself a responsible grown-up, now learn your lesson. Stuff like that happens everyday. Unless you can prove it, you got no case.
Or you could beat the crap outa the mailman until he talks.
