What myth? DDT is classified as a Class 2 carcinogen, based on animal studies. Because of its environmental effects, it's been banned in the US since the 1970's, though it's still used in many tropical countries to control the mosquitos that spread malaria.

No myth, DDT is a carcinogen and long lasting toxin in the enviroment - so it is a dangerous chemical. That being said, weight the dangers with the benefits. I believe that DDT has actually saved more peoples lives than penicillin, because it controlled (and still is used to control) mosquitos that carry maleria, which is a very deadly killer in 3thd world countries.

Are there alternative pesticides? Sure, but they cost more and dont work as well. These costs are considerations by the countries that use them.
