It's so sad that they do stay! I think these men have just beaten them down so far verbally & physically that they have no sense of self-worth. They seem to be afraid to stay or go.
If it happened to me just once, I'd be out the door!

They have a lack of self esteem. They feel that it's better to be with a man, even if he's abusive, rather than to be alone.

they think that they are in love, or they are to scared to say something or leave
