It would not and could not happen. There are many diverse computers on the internet that would prevent that.
Here is a small fact that many do not realize or think about. Following the collapse of the World Trade Center, the Stock Markets were closed for repair. Many many computers were crushed and lost. But in three days, the market re-opened. Many trading companies that had their main offices in the WTC were back on line in time to resume trading. That means that they were able to restore their precious (and this means MONEY) data and be back in business. It is simply amazing how resilient that the system is; and this represents only a small fraction of the internet.

Well.. the idea is too far fetched for a virus to knock down everything on the net.. virus attacks windows system. There are systems with all sorts of other operating systems out there on the net which would survive.

lots of chaos....but that's practically impossible..
the internet is not a global server, it's billions of PC'S connected together, not to mention sservers, from universities, the government.....and people could shut their servers down...
one example when they had to shut down the White House mailing system (e-mail) because one virus, kept sending miilloions of bulk e-mail... there was no loss of data or anything, the virus wasn't even malicious it was just plain annoying..receiving 1000's of e-mails a day.
also there are all sorts of OS Platforms... WINDOWS,FREEBSD,APACHE ,THE GOOD OL' GOVERNMENT's
anyway, also that's what anti-virus if for..(symantec,microsoft....)
also the masive robust infrastructure of the Internet andthe companies who use, it ..it's just not possible..
there is NO possible way it could happen..in a small scale yes..but global..no

Good question, but it will never happen. Due to the Mesh topology of the internet, when something goes haywire, traffic routes around it. There is no single point of failure.
