Hey, that's really absolute basics...?
p = 1/2 - 3 /8 = 1/8
m = 4.2 + 2.3 = 6.5

I'm going to try this without my 13 year old this time:
3/8 + 8p/8 = 4/8
8p/8 = 4/8 - 3/8
8p/8 = 1/8
p = 1/8
Am I right? Huh? Huh?
Proof:
3/8 + 1/8 = 1/2
4/8 = 1/2
1/2 = 1/2
OK my next attempt at the other question -
m - 2.3 = 4.2
m = 4.2 + 2.3
m = 6.5
Proof:
6.5 - 2.3 = 4.2
4.2 = 4.2
Ta da!!!!

first i would subtract 3/8 from both sides of the equation . now your equation show look like this ( p= -3/8 + 1/2) . now u have ur variable one side by it self . now u must add the two fractions together . to do that the denominators must be the same . now u multiply both the numerator and denominator by the #4 of the fraction 1/2, which now leaves u with a new fraction 4/8. ur equation show now look like this ( p= -3/8+4/8) now ur able to solve for ur variable by substacting 3/8 from 4/8 which leaves u with a positive 1/8 . now ur eqution should show that ( p= 1/8) .
in the second problem i would add 2.3 to both sides of the equation , now ur equation should look like this ( m=4.2+2.3)
now u can solve for M by adding 4.2 to 2.3 . now ur final answer should look like this (m =6.5)

p = 1/8; 3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8 = 1/2
m = 6.9; 6.9 - 2.3 = 4.2

do 1/2 - 3/8 = p
easier that way.
p=1/8 or .125

3/8 + P = 1/2
3/8 + P = 4/8
P = 4/8 - 3/8
P = 1/8
