Your true identity will be reached in any point of your life. It is a waste to search for it because it will find you. For me I found out who I really was in my Junior year. I was failing almost all my classes and really didn't care about my grades. Then I was watching the movie Malcolm X in World History class and realized that I could be so much more and maybe change the world in some way. Thats when I realized who I really was. I am a thinker one who sits and trys to find a better solution. I found my true identity at the age of 16 now I have my whole life to live it out.

You will find yours, just be patient and it will come.

identity is the name we give to the face we present to the world.
in this respect, it's just a concept, a social manifestation of our need to be special. the world we live in places so much importance on individuality that we all feel some sort of pressure to create our own identities, rather than accepting that in many respects, we're all the same.

from a completely practical point of view, it's a way of identifying ourselves from everyone else. in most situations, we need to separate ourselves from the rest of humanity: paying bills, signing up for courses, passports etc. we don't consider animals to have identities, but they never confuse their own children for someone else's - that's identity.

as for 'who am i?' as part of my identity: again, we're all pretty tied up with making ourselves feel special, or even just distinct, from those around us.

at the end of the day, most of us wouldn't want to define ourselves soley on our political point of view, our ability to keep the house tidy, how much money we make, what colour hair we have. yet these are all things we consider part of our identity because they supposedly say something else about you. that you're successful, that you're organised, educated, intelligent etc. but all these things are based on other people's perceptions of us.

when you can look at yourself and say 'you know what? i don't give a toss what other people think' then identity becomes irrelevant.

My experience is that identity is a layer in our personality.
Beneath identity lies your true self. AT some point in the process (i was 45) you have to let your identity go to attain your true self.
Since you are young i think it is ok to seek your identity.
I did it for many years. Finding myself in identity. But in the long
run identity will be just labels on top of who you really are.
I recommend yoga and mediation to get to this point.

If you want to find out your true identity, find a way to help someone else every single day. The less you think about yourself, the more you'll know who you are.

Your "ego," or identity as you put it, is a social fiction. However, our true identity may be far more profound than ego.
