That depends on who you ask and which culture you're talking about.

Democracies require a well-educated electorate, which is capable of understanding complex issues and arriving at their own conclusions.

In cultures with little-to-no citizen participation in government, education tends to be conflated with training or indoctrination. It minimizes dissent.

Some cultures have conflated education with job training, believing that people mainly exist to contribute to an economy.

Other cultures have conflated education with religious instruction, believing that everyone must accept a particular religion's ideas.

A few societies have valued learning for the sake of learning, thinking that the human condition would improve, and people would be happier, if people were able to understand each other, use their minds creatively, think critically, and behave ethically.

To recapitulate itself. To pass on the cultural values.
To make the kids think just like the parents think.
To maintain the status quo of the culture.
To pass it on to the next generation; values etc.

To place everyone on an even plane. To form a commonality of information so that society may function more efficiently. So that we all understand things on the same level. To further mankind's knowledge. To name a few reasons.

Hey now.... We teacher's are not babysitters.... Most of the time..

I think it's a place for people to grow and learn mostly about themselves and what they are capable of..

Education develops social skills and provides you with an experience that enhances your life...

Yes, you learn things that make you a better person mentally, but I think most important role of education is to provide you with a place to learn about yourself and what you are capable of becomming!

The aim is--or should be, I think--to cultivate skills in the next generation to prepare them to improve their own lot in life as well as that of their community, be it local, national, or global.

advanced baby sitting.......too many parents rely on teachers to do everything. Education should start and be supported at HOME.
