Climate wise, I would say Southern California, preferably San Diego or anywhere near Los Angeles. Downside.....high cost of living. If you love mountains, hills, camping, you would probably like Colorado. I have never lived there, so I do not know much about living costs. Good luck in your adventure! :)

New England, more specifically southern New England; you're within two hours of the White Mountains, an hour away from beaches of MA and RI and NH. And you're just a four hour drive away from NYC for a fun weekend. There's still good country land to buy in the suburbs, but be prepared to spend a minimum of $200,000.

From what you described, I'd suggest VA, or the Carolinas.
