Read some biography on the author - it's interesting because the novel is based somewhat on the town where he grew up. If you've actually read the book, it will make a lot of sense. I think a good start is that the story is partially about the history of a town and how everyone inhereits a bit of its history. It's been years since I've read it, but that jumped out at me when I read a story recently about how some of the residents of his hometown want to re-name it after him.
