I find it odd that there was a "witch of the east" (squished under the house), a "witch of the west" (melted), and a "witch of the north" (Glinda), but no "Witch of the South". I believe the current broadway play "Wicked" does indeed have a "Witch of the South" character, but why not the movie?

L Frank Baum was writing a political treatise masquerading as a children's story ... the scarecrow represented farmers, the tinman represented industry, the "yellow brick road" was the gold standard, and it led to the "Emerald City" which was actually brown old Washington DC, but they made you wear green glasses so it looked "emerald" and wealthy. The ruler of OZ was a fraud. Dorothy's shoes were supposed to be silver (the silver standard for money), but they got changed to red sequins in the film (Technicolor, you know?).
Baum didn't incude a "Witch of the South" because the South was pretty much eviscerated in the 1930s, when he was writing his thinly-veiled call for a populist uprising.

You know that is a good question.

Is Kanasas considered as a southern state?
