Television is in the business of selling advertising. And advertisers want to reach certain people and, for efficiency sake, reach as large a number of them as possible.
Thus, the television business has to cater to the desires of its real customers -- the advertisers -- by making sure the correct demographic is watching its programs, and making sure that sufficient numbers of that demographic are tuned in. How does it do that? By trying to broadcast shows that broadcasters and advertisers either think will reach these demographics/numbers of viewers -- or which have already proven to do so -- broadcasters hope to make their customers, the advertisers, happy.
Advertisers tend to want a younger audience, sometimes male, sometimes female. If 10 million 60 year olds are watching your show, advertisers aren't too happy. If 3 million 20 year olds are, they're alot happier, and if 10 million 20 year olds are, they're happier still.
