1977 by the books anyway. There were many so called proto-punk bands prior to that year but, the release of the Sex Pistols' album Never Mind the Bollocks... marks the start of "the punk era". There are many that argue that the Ramones were the first "punk rock" band, there are also some that say it was The New York Dolls. I think it depends on which of these two albums you consider "punk" The Stooges with the release of their self titled debut in 1969, or The Sonics with Here are the Sonics!!! in I 1965. Anyway, they are both great raw and loud rock and roll albums that you should get and listen to, because your frame of reference is way off. If you are going to listen to the music that you appear to be listening to, you really owe it to yourself to study it's history.

Easy Iggy and the Stooges should always be accredited with the birth of punk rock by far and that started in the late 60s. Ramones and Sex Pistols didnt come till much later and although they always get the most credit for the honor they just helped to expose it more. Then of course in there were the Slits, the Vibrators, Buzzcocks and many other 70s bands

my god is this what people have told you and your stupid for believeing them or your just slow

everyone here but the dude above me that mentioned the sonics and the new york dolls is wrong and hes the closest but even before the sonice and the new york dolls was the beatles and elvis
both of which were in the post punk but they are still the first people to go there own way away from the mainstream types and do what kind of music they wanted to do and thats what punk is about doing what you want to do how you want to and then other bands started playing differently and trying to do what they wanted and play how they wanted and out of it grew punk starting after the beatles with bands like the new york dolls and the sonics and the ramones arent really the starters of punk they were one of the people that was there from the begining but they werent very big at all until punks first wave but they are still counted as a post punk band because they were started in the post punk era. and then the sex pistols came way after in the first wave of punk not in the post punk wave which is another misconception if you want the full story of punks birth goto the wikipedia.com website and do a search for punk and that will have a completed history of punk rock there.. mine is barely brushing the surface of punks history..

lol....Nirvana is NOT punk...Nirvana put grunge out into the open in the '90s. Punk is much older. Punk IS Ramones, Buzzocks, Sex Pistols, Toy Dolls, etc......you poor poor misguided soul you...check Wikipedia. The old saying "Punks Not Dead" needs to change with the times now...Punk is Dead...and it's all Avril Lavigne's fault XD hahaha....

Anyone who said The Ramones or Sex Pistols is way off. Punk was around before '76.

nirvana? foo fighters?
you ignorant twerp!

punk rock started in 1975/1976.
it was about the attitude to do things for yourself and fight the corporate system.
iggy pop is a punk icon.
and as for the buzzcocks, well starting your own record label to release songs was punk ethos in a nutshell.
come back when you know your history.

Punk started in the late sixties/early seventies, when the Ramones did.

Whoa, young one! You are several years too late. Punk started in the seventies. Try Sex Pistols.
