The term stands comes from the old days when makeshift areas were designed by elevated rows to make the people watch the ball game from a safe distance. they didn't have seats and people would actually stand watching the game. An inning is not the way you spelled it.

its called stands because back on the day there werent enough seats so many would stand and its called an Inning because every 6 outs the enter IN to another one

cuz anyone would rather sit int the stands, then stand in the sits. And a outing was already being used.
