i live in europe and just watched a couple of episodes of Idol's last season (including the big finale) and just can't understand what is it that is so special about that show that makes it #1 in the US. I mean, come on, its' just a song contest. I'm not saying it's bad; it's done well but then again... #1???
for example, i also saw an entire season of 'Entourage' and it was 10 times more entertaining than Idol.
Anyone agree with me?

I think one thing that drew people to the show was the fact that the viewing audience got to vote on who they thought was the best contestant. Also, I think that Americans like seeing people achieving the American dream and helping them do so.
As for comparing it to Entourage, I can't say; I've never watched that show.

Music in North America is way more entertaining to them than soaps and stuff. I haven't even heard of Entourage, and I'm froM Canada. People make deals about Idol's and stuff because it's there chance to vote for a singer in their country, and it's entertaining to see them all sing, see who rocks, and who sucks. I as well don't understand how it's #1, but c'mon Canadian/American Idol has taken over!

I agree with you "play" . Being an american, I think that American Idol( idiot) is about as stupid as it can get. Being number 1, beats the heck out of me. There are alot more interesting shows on the tube besides watching a bunch of nobodies getting up in front of the world TRYING to sing. You others can call me jealous because I dont have a singing voice. That my friends you dont know I can sing, but would never get up in front of people all over the globe to show how stupid I look trying to sing.

Becasue its fun to watch new talent being groomed. It's even funnier to watch people who's mama told them they can sing, but in reality, a howling dog at the moon sounds better.
Sometimes talent is new, fresh, clean... like Clay, or Kelly and other talents are hacks - like Britney.

People like to laugh at that people that aren't very good. They like to get to know each of the final contestants, and when people feel like they know them personally they get involved in the show.

People who aren't on the show like to fantasize that it's them winning.....that's why it's so appealing. Ordinary people striving for success.

you have to watch it from beginning to end....you get to know the personalities, background, talent etc.......its fun!
