A quill ( writing intrument) , parchment , open book.. they are all good ideas.
Is there a character in your writings that appeals to you? maybe you could draw up what the character looks like and have that tattooed and then a quote from the story under it.
But as for symbolizing "writing" about all I can think of is having a pen, pencil, quill... a writing instument tattooed on you .. I wouldnt have it just "sitting" there I would have it "writing" a favorite passage/quote of yours.

I would say have them draw up a pen/pencil/quill then coming from the tip of the utencil, have some symbolic things that you write about be put into a swirly type design.

Have you heard of the quill and scroll society? It's for high school journalism students but their logo is of course a quill and scroll.
