I have a brother who is 12, He tried to make a piece of toast this morning and couldn't figure out how to spread butter on a piece of toast. Do you think somethings wrong with him?

to anwer the butt question, he learned that earlier this year. He is a mama's boy and never has to do anything for himself (other than eating and toilet stuff) including getting dress propperly most of the time. I don't know if he has a learning disability, but he is a middle child. I do help him at times but only when I don't think it is a cry for attention of something stupid (my dad asked him to take out the trask once and he asked him where he wanted him to take it).

You're his brother... giving some credit, at least he knew it had to be spread... perhaps the butter was hard...you know what I mean, Maybe the butter needed a few seconds on "defrost" in the microwave. Some kids are so doted upon that they never learn their kitchen skills until much later. If you really feel there's something "wrong" he should be tested. My guess he's just lazy.

If he's not allowed to do much for himself then of course he's not going to know how to do even the smallest tasks. Sounds like he's either babied too much or he could have a serious neurological problem. I have a 14 year old son who still has trouble tying his shoelaces. He prefers shoes without laces. But then again, we've had him to a doctor and found out he has a condition that's related to autism. Does your brother have trouble doing other simple things or is he really just babied too much?

Sure sounds like he has SOME kind of problem. What? He's never handled a butter knife before? maybe you should see if he's upstairs smoking weed before he comes downstairs and finds little things like that as too complicated.
Sure hope he can wipe his own...*ahem* after using the bathroom too. Because if you buttered the toast for him guess what you'll be doing next?

..Wow. It seems that kid has been really protected and cared for. Maybe if the parents backed off a bit and tried to teach the child Independance, later complications in life will go easier for he will have an idea of how to handle them.

he sounds sheltered. Does mom and dad do everything for him? If so, then that could be a good indicator of more of that to come in his life. I'm assuming you are the older sibling... Try to be his teacher of life. He will look up to you forever!!!!

Maybe he was just tired. Sometimes the most capable and intellegent brains just skip a beat.

Either something is wrong, or he's just trying to get attention.
