Gay marriage doesn't threaten straight marriage. If you're straight, you aren't going to marry someone of the same sex just because you can.
It wasn't that long ago when it was illegal in most states for blacks and whites to marry. The arguments against mixed-race marriages were similar to those against gay unions: There was a threat to an entrenched majority. The supposed threat in interracial marriages was that the white race would be diluted with impure blood and become less than it was before.
Using the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Supreme Court in 1967 ruled that such discrimination was illegal. Still, it took until 2000 for Alabama to repeal its law forbidding marriages between people of different ethnicity. (On the plus side, Alabama hadn't enforced the law for years.)
Eventually, the same thing will happen with gay marriages. Unfortunately, given the current composition of the Supreme Court, we may have to wait until a more tolerant president has the opportunity to appoint new Justices.

People who make this statement start off the with the assumption that being gay or homosexual is wrong. Of course, it naturally follows from this assumption that something that is morally wrong ruins the sanctity of something considered holy and pure. This statement, designed to discredit gay marriage is a fallacy and people who use it have no basic sense for logic.
You've also gotta realise, the institution of marriage was long ago shot to hell and gone when people started having premarrital sex... Maybe we should fix that problem first before we go around changing some peoples' way of life...

Because marriage is a contract with God, and God has implied that it is between a man and a woman (as where else will the kinds come from), this flies in the face of God.
Now, I have to assume that, because it was between a man and a woman, Britney Spears' 55-hour marriage, Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor (who have 16 marriages between them) and Anna Nicole Smith, who married that old geezer, does not threaten the sanctity of marriage.
Go figure.

Thought process of Fundamentalist Christian: Well if two men or two women can marry each other, then that means we'll have to start allowing people to marry animals. What about the sanctity of marriage!

Two men or women getting "married" does not threaten my marriage. What I find funny though, is that our idea of marriage was started by God and God doesn't mention same sex marriage. So, why would gay people want to do something like that?

I think you answered the question yourself. It seems illogical, doesn't it? I would just chalk it up to homophobia. I also find it ironic that there are a number of people who believe that who come from states where there are really high divorce and teen-pregnancy rates, and children born out of wedlock. So much for the sanctity of marriage.

Marriage and family are the backbone/strength of a society.
Marriage was instituted by GOD, meant for one man and one woman, to be one. To procreate and fill the earth with boys and girls, who would grow up and marry girls and boys and so on and so forth!
Anything outside of God's plan is sin, and sin corrupts and tears down the strength of what God intended. So, if you pay close attention, homosexual "marriage" will lead to other corrupted forms of "marriage", men with boys or girls, and so on.

They seem to think if same sex couples can get married, then soon people will be able to marry animals and marriage will become meaningless. I really don't see how they make that jump from human to human marriage to marrying animals. It makes no sense.

There isnt a rationale. Because it will never make sense. Its a statement used to invoke fear for straight people who can't make up their minds. Family people, old people, young children.
