Technology is amazingly good for us.

100 years ago most people sat around gossiping about whether the maid in the big house was pregnant and she got hurt by this real bad. There were some frustrated people who knew there was a bigger world out there, but they had very routes to access it. Today the same people who gossiped about maids gossip about J-Lo, but she is rich and powerful enough to totally not care. And the people who want to know about global warming and the new German chancellor? Well they finally get their share and say.

More soldiers died in World War One from horrible gangerine and filthy pneumonia than died from bullets and bombs. You're sorry that war is faster and quicker now? That we are not dependent on the fat fool in the big house to lead millions of conscripts into war while he bufooned around the back office? I'm not.

War is horrible. But it's less horrible now. And it will always be with us.

One in four people are touched by child abuse as children. That was before the internet. It will be that way after the internet.

The only thing that's changed is that people accept that it's an issue now. Before people were just "funny".

That's progress too, helped by technology.

Can you please point to the time when children were not violated, when rich men didn't make poor men fight in mindless wars, when people lived longer and happier and didn't beat up their wives and kids?

Names, places, dates please.

When technology is controlled by huge corporations who care only about shareholder value, then technology "hurts". When it is in the hands of hobbyists and small, non-profit-maximizing community-based organizations, then it "helps". So a better question is "where can I get my hands on community-based technology, and not support those big corporations who will do harm?" And I'd suggest part of that answer is to start looking into grassroots technologies like
-Ubuntu Linux and other Open Source software.
-green technologies.
-bicycles.
And please watch the movie "The Corporation", which gives huge backup to my points here.

It all comes down to choice. If we as consumers of technology choose to support its use through mindless reality shows and pornography then even as technology betters our lives, we will become desensitized to life. However, no matter what you think of the cutural and moral applications of technology, scientific progress in itself betters humanity.

The scary thing is, no matter how you choose to use technology, there will probably be enough people who drive it into the dirt. So people will never have reason to stop producing senseless media. Nothing like bandwagons to throw your free choice out the window.

i agree with you. we have become so depended on technology in the last few years. at school we learn more about how to operate a calculator than actually doing the steps long hand. i am in the 11th grade and i dont know how to find square roots or do sine and cosine operations without a calculator. half our projects must be either researched online or done in powerpoint. i believe for the sake of the next generations we should limit our dependence of technology and make sure they're prepared for blackouts and viruses

Well, there will always be Luddites.

Consider non-invasive heart surgery, solar energy, the wristwatch, internet shopping, the 911 system, anti-missle early detection systems and similar technologies and then reconsider your question.

Sure, any fool can pull a trigger, but where does the evil reside? In the hand, or in the heart?

Every time something is created in technology, it can also be used for destructive purposes. Take nanotechnology. We're looking at something that may eradicate cancer and other diseases, but it can also be used to destroy a building with something that is invisible to the human eye. There is no way we can protect ourselves from this, except if we stopped using technology althogether.

All these negative points are reactions to inventions that have helped us, TV can be used to find out information quickly, as can the internet, the net is full of porn and spam, but generally it's pretty out of the way if you know what you're looking for, generally it's pretty controlled. Yes technology has helped and hindered us, but I say it's pretty equal, Equivalent Exchange if you will... just my opinion.

Technology isn't all bad. Television is addictive yes, but it has taught people alot about the world that they wouldn't learn in their lifetime without it. There are pro's and con's to technology, I see more pro's than anything.

Are guns bad? Are computers bad? Are heart machines bad? Technology is not a moral thing it is up to humans to use them correctly and to think and act with a conscience. The problem is that we often do not do this, that is bad!

I think technology can do a lot to help us. We can make cures for disease and medications to help others. We can communicate with each other better and get to know the world around us.
