With Queen it didn't start that way, Brian May & Freddie Mercury wrote most everything. They agreed to allow one song each for Roger & John on the eariler albums, then as they learned and honed their skills as a band and writers they started to write more then eventually all songs on the albums are attriubed to "Queen" not Brian , Freddie, Roger or John, just the entire team. The way a real true band should function. No wonder they always had such great success!

I don't want to sound like an old fart (I'm 31) but it's easier to be in a 'successful' band these days. Instead of slugging your gear from pub to pub and playing your heart out with good original material it seems to me that these days the main criteria for many record companies is "Do they have the look?" If they have the look the songs will be written for them. This is by no means a new phenomenon. It happened long ago with bands like The Monkees. As for all band members contributing, for me this made each bands music much more interesting as everyone has there own style of songwriting. Lennon and McCartney being a prime example of this.
Many groups who recorded during the seventies grew up listening to rock n roll, jazz, blues and soul and this had an effect on their songwriting. I reckon each band member felt qualified to write their own stuff as they grew up listening to the same music. They didn't have the huge choice that's available these days. That had to have an effect.
Sorry it's a bit long-winded! Hope it helps!

I agree with most of the guys above. Most of the great bands had members not only musically educated but also passionate about writing lyrics & creating music to such extent, that they managed to succeed from their very first albums! Nowadays it's all about borrowing/stealing samples or making covers of oldies, in other words most of the new bands go for the sure shot! That's why they often end up as one hit wonders! It's sad to say that artists are not as creative and innovative as in the 50's 60's or 70's!

In the Old Days, people actually had to have some musical talent to get into a band. Its not so unusual that each band member contributed some songs.

Because all the band members are a true band, not just a couple of songwriters and the rest being hired musicians...

Because they were ALL involved in the song writing and every other aspect of the band equally. There wasn't any one person making the decisions. It was a "GROUP" effort.

There are two answers to this question:
1) Cooperation
2) Comprimise (watch the queen documentories for evidence... Freddie and Rodger used to argue frequently!)

those are the exceptions, not the rule.
They were together from early teen years and knew each other very well, they had time to develop a very good working relationship.

because they have a special gift that not everyone haves and if you do find you can play as good as hendrix then sign to a record company.
