A stalagmite (from the Greek stalagma ("ΣÏαλαγμίÏηÏ"), "drop" or "drip") is a type of speleothem that rises from the floor of a limestone cave due to the dripping of mineralized solutions and the deposition of calcium carbonate.
A stalactite (Greek stalaktos, (ΣÏαλακÏίÏηÏ), "dripping" or "dropped"), or dripstone, is a type of speleothem that hangs from the ceiling or wall of limestone caves.

One hangs from the ceiling and one comes up from the floor. I believe the stalactite is the one hanging from the ceiling.
