Europe as a whole (especially Italy) is experiencing a problem with under-population. In Italy and Sweden, I believe, the birth rate is below what is called the 'replacement rate', which is 2.1 children per family (they are at 1.7 and 1.9). This means that in the near future there will not be a large population of young, fertile adults to keep the country's population steady. In Italy this is caused by older men still living at home with their mothers, wining and dining women instead of settling down with them.

Of course that is just a couple of the countries in Europe, but I think the continent as a whole is shifting away from large families and marriage in general.
