There are no signs except at times an ultrasound will pick it up. My best friend had an ultrasound a few weeks ago and they could see that the baby has a cleft pallet. They are planning surgery for as soon as he is born.

It can sometimes be seen in the 20 week ultrasound depending on the position of the baby and the severity of the cleft. You can get a 3-d ultrasound but insurance doesn't cover that.

I don't think there are any signs, but check into a level 2 ultrasound. When I was pregnant with my daughter we thought there may be something wrong with her. My doctor referred me to a specialist who gave me the L2 ultrasound and I could see everything from her brain to her bloodvessels, and by the way, she is fine.

there are no signs.....i had a baby with a birth defect and i didn't find out until the ultrasound. she is now 4 and you wouldn't even know that she was born with a defect the only signs are three scars on her tummy that make her special and unique.

I don't think htere are any signs. Inadiquate prenantal care can increase the risk, but its really just random. Don't worry about it.

the only way to know before birth is for it to be seen during an ultrasound.
