Soaps are infamous for doing this. The term I believe is called SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Age Syndrom). Most characters on daytime that were born in the 80's have teenaged kids, some are older than chacters born before them. For example:Nick Newman on Y&R was born in the 80's, he's now 30ish with a school aged son. Daniel on Y&R, we all saw him as a baby in the late 80's or early 90's...he's married and just graduated high school. Georgie on GH was born in what 95 and she's a high school graduate and just divorced Dillion!
As far as Colby is concerned she has been Soarased in time for the teen summer storyline. The show is lacking in the teen department right now with the exception of Reggie, Danielle and Lily. Danielle is leaving so Colby will be the right age to have a storyline with Reggie.
Aging these kids keeps story going for the families they are tied to as well.

This particular case is driving me crazy. Not only is Colby the wrong age...almost everyone is the wrong age...Jamie and JR shouldn't be as old as they are either. I was watching when Brooke was pregnant with Jamie and that has only been fifteen or sixteen years at the most. :)
But since Colby left at age 5 or 6 approximately, and returned about eighteen months later as ten years older...it's incredibly annoying.
The only properly aged children still on a soap opera is Michael and perhaps Morgan on GH. Carly had Michael in 1996--I believe in December--and they've still got him at about the right age 10 or 11.

i don't watch AMC, but i have seen this happen before, a lot, on other soaps over the years.
The writers wanted a child for plots - up to age 5 or 6 or so. then they don't know anything (dramatic) to write about an 8 or ten year old, so Poof! Magically, that child is a teenager, and the writers can write about teenage angst, developing sexuality, conflicts with parents, drugs, etc.
this might also be influenced by child labor laws for actors.

Children on soap operas grow at an accelerated rate as opposed to non-TV children. So while lil' Billy was just 5 years old 3 wks ago on any given soap, the next time you tune in (again 3 wks later) Lil' Billy is home from boarding school and is now in his early 20's. Must have something to do with the lifestyle "soap kids" live.

i do not watch it because my mom did, even though it likely is hereditary, LOL! My mom changed into actual gazing AMC (the in ordinary words cleansing soap she watched) in the wellbeing facility even as she changed into having me. She thinks it quite is possibly why i love soaps and that i'm a "cleansing soap queen" as she calls me. i love soaps, yet even as i began gazing my first cleansing soap I wasn't that conscious of the actual undeniable actuality that my mom watched AMC for on the point of 30 years. i'm really particular my mom knew about soaps because her dad and mom both watched GH many years after it first began by using the 90s or so. My aunt (mom's sister) also turned right into a cleansing soap viewer, she watched Days yet i do not comprehend which decade it changed into, although i'd wager the 70s and 80s because it quite is even as her youngsters were born and he or she likely stumbled onto Days even as on maternity go away.

have you ever heard of rapid soap child aging (there is a specific name but I forget what it is)? that happens in every story line. goodness, every soap uses it. one year the child is one, then 2 then 7 then a teenager. Lily is supposed to be 15 but they rapidly aged her to 18...

It is soap opera logic. People age very rapidly until they get to about 25, then stop aging for a while, then may end up aging in reverse.

Teenagers make for more dramatic storylines than little kids; all soaps do this.

its hard to build an intersting story around a seven year old, so they age them, so they can have interesting storylines that people can get into.
