if a tree falls in the forest and lands on you and you're screaming, but nobody is around to hear it, are you really making a sound?

DAMN STRAIGHT YOU ARE. and that tree made a lot of noise too.

and if i man is in the woods alone, HE'S LUCKY, and he's there most likely to escape a woman's nagging.

lol.

Well, how did you come to know that this aforementioned tree fell at all? Did you come upon it lying on the ground, and assumed that it fell? If we continue to assume that you did not hear it fall, we can assume, if we like, that it made no sound. Though this is very unlikely, if we observe nothing more than the tree, ignoring everything else, then we would have a problem proving that it did make a sound if nothing bears the resultant effects, such as a scurrying squirrel, the compressed and rarefacted air, snapped branches on surrounding vegetation. Common sense can easily save us some time with this tired koan, but it's not a totally pointless excercise for beginners. I think this begs us, "What is knowledge?"

Being technical yes, it still makes a sound.
Really good question though
I suppose for it not to make a sound it would have to be in the void of space, but then, you can't really "fall" in space, i guess the tree would just sorta float there.

A falling tree creates vibrations in the air (as well as some damage on what it falls on). Vibrations in the carrier medium are not sound. Sound is when someone perceives those vibrations and therefore hears sound.

Sound requires three things: a transmitter (tree hitting the ground), a conduit (air) and a receiver (ear). If there's no one around at all, nothing to receive the sound waves, there's no sound. So you can answer no, but only under a very specific circumstance.

I dont think so. I think the sound is the thing that we hear right? so if nobody hears it it doesnt make a sound but Im not sure.

Yes. Sounds is a physical occurence. Just because your ears are not there to pick the waves up, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Yes, but here is another question like that one. If a man is alone out in the wilderness, and there is no women there, and he says something is he still wrong?
