If I felt as strongly about this as Bono is supposed to, I would give away almost everything (just leaving enough to live on.) The fact that Bono isn't prepared to do this really irritates me.
He lives a life of excess and this is offensive when he lectures everyone about poverty.
After all this is a man who paid for his favourite hat to be flown first class!
Why does anyone take him seriously.
At least Bill Gates is putting his money where his mouth is.

someone famous comes on the boards with a sensible question ( which is more than i can say for most ) and a genuine concern for the world . and gets nothing but disrespect and abuse .
he is a human being who does more than his fair share to help those in need , after all so many artists wouldn't give their time would they ?
Why doesn't Bono give most of the ridiculous amount of money he earns away to help poverty??
how do you know he doesn't ??
and i cant speak for the man himself but im sure he gives more than enough as i don't feel he is hypocritical to his cause
I'm not speaking as an avid Bono fan either but i do admire the work he and the likes of him have done, and how they use their positions to make a change to the world instead of selling themselves off to Hello magazine and such like to earn even more ridiculous amounts
give the guy a break please

Bono does not donate much money to these causes he just gets other people to do it and calls it his Charity when it does not belong to anyone really. He then sits back and gets all the free publicity while you and others send in there hard earned money to the Government of Africa who gives only a very small percent of it to it's people for aid.
Let me add one more thing to this for something someone else said on here already.
When good people donate they do not post it for others to see what they do or have given so if someone is able to look up how much Bono donated that should tell you right off he is doing it for attention and not out of kindness. If you have to have a ledger or a receipt to donate you are not donating you are looking for a tax deduction and that is a totally different thing all together.

In a liberal democracy wherein there is no restriction on the exchange of, and payment for , goods and services, those who are very good at what they do earn far above the average wage. In Western societies, the top doctors, lawyers, engineers, hedge fund managers, software entrepreneurs, architects, restaurant owners, chefs, TV presenters, talk show hosts, accountants are all multi-millionaires. It is simple; If you have a talent, ability or a body of knowledge that is in demand and you are intent on becoming well-off, your spouse, parents and children will never lack anything that they want or need. Would you rather live under a highly-censored Politburo-led, Mugabe-style communist dictatorship with a top-down, rigidly-controlled command economy??? Would you?? I say, live and let live. More power to the footballers legs. I try to be happy at the successes of others. I try to live without jealousy or envy. What with injuries, squad rotation and the ruthlessly efficient transfer system, a footballer in a top-division league eg the Premiership, Serie A[Italy], dieBundesliga[Germany], La Liga[Spain], or Holland's Eredivisie tend to have a top-flight career spanning only 7-12 years, 15 years maximum.

I don't think he is anywhere near as wealthy as you suggest, as he is quite ambivolent to his own wealth - thats why he splits all rights 4 equal ways even though he writes most of the U2 songs.
I'm pretty confident that he gives away a large proportion of his wealth anyway - but knows that to publicise thiswould be PR suicide, as he would effectively be saying "look how great I am".
I think it is excellent that he uses his high profile and influence to change such things, he exerts considerable pressure on governments around the world with great success - I doubt that there are many of us who could say we have accomplished anywhere near as much with our own lives or abilities.
I wish there were a few more like him rather than the some of the other selfish and arrogant rock stars that exist - too many to mention I'm afraid.

I'm with you on this. it takes only one millionaire to make a thousand paupers. But in fairness Bono is not in the same ball-park as a certain Union of States which is squandering half the world's resources and screwing quarter of the world's population

In the mid-1980's BAND AID raised around £60 million, mainly for Ethiopia.
Between 1981-1985 Ethiopia spent at least $2 billion on arms.

Bono is quite charitable with his money, and gives freely to these type of organizations. If you thought to do any research on your opinionated question before asking it, you would have known this. So, what have you done?

actually no. Throwing money at it doesn't solve the problem. Giving money to the governments in foreign countries just makes it easier for the money to go anywhere other than the poor people. Unless someone DOES something with that money, it doesn't do any good.

Becuase he doesn't want us to give our money to the poor people, he wants that poor people become able to create a respectable income for themselves instead of living out of our charity. That is why he wants to change world trade. And even with all of his money, he wouldn't be able to feed all the people that live with less than a $1.00 a day.
