Don't let you confuse, the "[ ]" are just to separate the values from the mean sign "+" that means "addition". Before "-5" and "+5" theres is a "+1" value, and the "[ ]" indicate a muntiplication between values:

(+1)(-5) = -5 = [-5]

(+1)(+5) = +5 = 5 = [5]

[-5] + [5] = -5 + 5 = 0

And viceversa, you turn around the values (numbers) with it respective signs, leaving alone the central "+" sign:

+ (+1)(-5) = + (-5)

5 + (-5) = 0

Also: 5 + (-5) = 5 - 5 = 0
