Protected from whom? Folklore will last forever, it was the 'word' before books, the knowledge before Christianity. Folklore has existed through all governments , principalities and attempts to destroy it. Much has been lost, but one day, this, too may be folklore.
By all means, protected and and memorialized!

folklore already belongs to the public domain. Just because I try to "own" Zeus, doesn't give me exclusive rights to the name or the story.

I say protect it. That way you can place the ten commandments the preceps of islam, hinduism, buddhism, and paganism up in front of a courthouse and that way everyone will be offended equaly.
