The car has been driving rough lately. First the Speedometer starts going all over the place, then it will completely die. After a couple of minutes the car will not shift into the next gear.

Its a 94 saturn and it is an automatic.

Assuming you have already checked the fluid level and do periodic fluid & filter changes(if you haven't, try this first- also check the modulator valve, if your trans has one)...otherwise, it sounds like the clutch pack is going away in your tranny. Burnt, brown fluid with metal flecks in in it is a dead giveaway. Time for a rebuild, or a new one. Or, if you are on a budget you can go to a salvage yard and roll the dice on a used one. The speedometer problem is probably from the trans sensor overheating.

Hope this info helped.

Sounds like the transmission, but it's possible an electronic malfunction like the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or control computer could cause it. Make sure the transmission fluid level reads good after the car has been driven at least 30 minutes and then parked and engine idling. The Saturns have a conventional external oil type filter on the transmission in many cases that can be changed easily without dropping the transmission pan. Drain the transmission fluid into gallon containers and replace exactly the same number of quarts of Dexron III transmission fluid. Screw on a new transmission filter and you've serviced the transmission.
