My best bet would have been that he was on a cow or a bull, since Sweden is very unlikely to have brought their mooses to the new world. The British and the Dutch however I would give more chance, hence the cow or bull.

I'm not sure if moose were ridable but if the Spaniards never brought over horses, I guess mankind would've tamed other creatures for domestic and transportation uses.

However, moose are not as fast as horses are.

FUN QUESTION! If the spanish ,had not brought horses to here, then one of the colonizing nations of that era would have! so this question is purely humor.and The Duke would have said his most famous Quote"That 'll Be The Day".Which Buddy HollY ,made into an American Rock Classic.

THE HORSE WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO NORTH AMERICA
IN 1820. THE INDIANS OF THE GREAT PLAINS WERE THE FIRST TO USE THE HORSE, WHICH ALLOWED GREATER MOBILITY FOR HUNTING AND SETTING UP NEW VILLAGES.
JOHN WAYNE WOULD NOT OF SAT ON A MOOSE, IMAGINE THE DUKE SAYING WAGONS HO WHILE SITTING ON A MOOSE.

it would be funny to see John Wayne in a moose or buffalo, but I think that if the Spaniard hadn't brought horses some other european colonist would had.

If we ask, if horses did not exist in America could we have used moose? No. Read guns germs and steel about domesticable animals. Moose are pretty dangerous too, not only could he not ride one, it probably would have trampled him to death when he tried.
